2010 Happenings

Well, I'm sitting in the Osaka airport, trying to have a good attitude about my delayed flight. I thought I'd take the time to let you all know what I've been up to this year so far, as promised. Well... here goes, the last few months in a nutshell:

Teaching: I've am teaching music again this year, and am also teaching 6th grade Math, History, Spelling, High School Speech/Yearbook, and 8th Grade English. Yep. I'm very busy at school. While I welcome the busy schedule as opposed to last year's slow schedule, it has been difficult to juggle everything. I have discovered that I LOVE being in the classroom with the 6th graders and have been considering the options of whether to pursue music teacher positions or elementary teacher positions. I am currently still undecided.

Church: I am still attending Koza Baptist Church, the same church I got involved in last year. I love my church family and am involved in the Music Ministry and the Youth Group. I have actually taken an internship-like position as the Worship Assistant and work a few hours each week helping send out emails, prepare for the weekly music, and anything else music-related that needs to get done.

Friends: I have a great group of friends that have become like family. I am so sad that many of us are going our separate ways this spring. We are currently in a Bible study together that meets weekly at my house. The rest of the week we just hang out and goof off.

Events: Because it has been such a busy year so far I have hardly done much other than my weekly work and church routine. I went zip-lining with my friends, went to a student's ballet recital, and helped out with several Youth Group and church events.

Running: Running is my latest passion. Last year, I started a diet that worked for a little bit, but completely failed in the end. I gained back all of the weight that I lost plus a little bit. When I left Arizona this summer, I decided that my only goal for health this year was to get in better shape. I didn't know what that would look like, but I knew that my diet and exercise habits had to change and that getting in shape (even if I didn't lose any weight at first) would help me be more motivated to eat healthier. At the beginning of October, I decided that the easiest and cheapest exercise plan was to run. I'm surrounded by military people who are always running and are addicted to it. I have always HATED running, ever since I was a kid. I only ran out of necessity for sports, and even then... I hated it and it hated me. Knowing that, I decided to attempt to get over my hatred of running. I downloaded an application on my iPod touch that uses the Couch to 5k running program. The program is 9 weeks so I made the goal to run a 5k by Christmas. The Couch to 5k program works you up to a 5k very slowly through integrating jogging and walking ... which is exactly what I needed. I run 3 days a week and have gone from 20 minutes workouts consisting of 60 seconds running, 90 seconds walking to running 30+ minutes. The program lets me listen to music and then it interrupts the music to tell me when to run, when to walk, how many minutes are left, etc. It has been a great program to use, because I don't have to think about anything other than getting out there and enduring until I heard "Chime, chime, chime, WALK." I am running my first 5k when I am home for Christmas break. I am so excited at my progress and can't believe I have made it this far. I hit a tough spot at about week 6 and was finally able to break through around week 8. All and all it has taken me 11 weeks to complete. I have already downloaded the next program to train for a 10k which I'd like to run by April or May. I still can't say that I LOVE running, and I don't think I ever will. I love the progress I've made and I love the feeling of accomplishment after every run. But the actual running part is pretty much torture... pure torture. Running has helped me develop a better awareness of how important endurance is in life. Most of the good things in life are difficult, and rarely fun while we're in process. However, the rewards are great when we endure. I don't think I will ever love the physical act of running... but I am addicted to the sport. There is always a challenge, always one more goal to work for, whether it be to add time, distance, or increase your pace... there is always the push to do better, to be better.

Well that about sums it up... just in time for me to FINALLY board my plane from Osaka to San Francisco. I'm sure there will be plenty of hassle on the other end... because I'm pretty sure I will miss my connecting flight. But I will stay positive because I will be home for Christmas, and that is worth the wait.

fresh start for my blog

Well, I guess I don't need to tell any of you that I've been slacking in the blog world this year. Last year, I tried really hard to post about every major event at school, sight-seeing trip, and everything in between. I think I tried too hard and got burnt out. This year I haven't really had the time or desire to write long blog posts... so I just haven't written any. I often find myself wanting to post something small to let everyone know what I'm up to and thinking about, but I have felt that it would be out of place in my organized, event-driven blog. So...

I'm giving my blog a fresh start with a new look and a few new goals. My first goal is to write about more of the little stuff in life pertaining to living in Japan, teaching, running (my latest passion), music, spiritual thoughts, friends, and anything else I can think of. My second goal is that this blog would easily transition out of my current life in Japan and into whatever lies ahead. And my third and final goal is to keep things fairly short and easy to read... I want my posts to be worth reading, but I don't want you to feel like you have to break out your laptop power adapter in case your computer dies before you finish reading my latest post.

Over the next few weeks I'll try to catch you up on the last three and a half months and what all I've been up to this school year so far. Hopefully, by January 1st, you'll be all caught up and I'll be able to just write about whatever I feel like. I hope you enjoy!

Blessings,
Jessica

School Days

Throughout the school year I have taken quite a few pictures during the school days... most of them were for the yearbook but I thought I'd share them on my blog too. It has been a great year and I have learned a lot about being a teacher. My students are wonderful, even the challenging ones. I am constantly amazed at how loving kids are... they never seem to run out of love to give. Even the long, exhausting days have highlights of laughter and fun. Here are some pictures from school days over the last few months:

Spirit Week

Spirit week is always a fun time... I remember getting into it in high school and it was fun to see that excitement in my students. It is fun to be a teacher for spirit week... you can be as crazy as you want and no one cares. And if your students think you're crazy, well... they probably already do. :) It was a fun week full of crazy outfits and school spirit.

"Multiplicity Monday" - it is like twin day but the goal is to get as many people to match as possible

I joined the high school group for this day. we made t-shirts and wore jeans (timothy had already changed for P.E. in this picture).

Milena & Mana - probably the most exact "twins" of the day

Kiana, Risa, Elena, Kai, & Mai

5th grade boys - Ryota, Kai, Susumu, & William

5th & 6th Grade Girls - Mona, Rio, Mona, Rimi, AC, and Ayame

Monica & Carolyn

The largest group of "twins" was the Kindergartners who wore black and jeans.

Mona & Rio - 5th grade

Tomomi

Kanon & Jueri

Office ladies - Junko & Chikako

"Wacky Wednesday"

funny story - I was worried that I was overdoing it for "Wacky Wednesday" because the information sheet just said crazy hair and socks, but when I came out of my room to go to school Kristen was dressed almost identically. We both had striped shirts, mismatched earrings, crazy hair, shorts over leggings, and crazy socks/shoes. We just laughed and hoped that we didn't get into a car accident on the way to school. People all day said that they thought we coordinated on purpose.

Leo and Izzy

5th & 6th grade girls

5th grade boys

3rd graders

2nd grade

Carolyn had a pretty wacky outfit

Lauren's wacky hair

"Character Day"

I was Pocahontus for character day. I can't remember what Mr. Elofson said he was.

Odai

Rino & Aika

these guys were my favorite for the day - Casey & Cody

Kristen was Pippy Long Stocking for the day

1st & 2nd grade girls

Monica dressed as Minnie Mouse

"Color Day" - Each class had a specific color for the day. The goal was to see how much of that color they could wear as a class.

3rd grade - red

4th grade - blue

5th & 6th grade - brown

PreK & Kindergarten - Yellow

1st & 2nd grade - white
